"The general impression in the United States is that the straight-six is a baseline engine good for truck usage or for good fuel economy," said Greg Koesel, who organized the inliners-...Read More

Collector car on a budget - 1960 Custom Imperial four-door sedan
Posted by Kurt Ernst - Richard Douglas with sons Lloyd (L), Asa (C) and Zeb (R). Photos by author. Richard Douglas is a big fan of our $5,000 Challenge series, as it drives home the message that one doesn't need to be wealthy to purchase a collector car. A carpenter by trade with a wife and three sons to support, Richard's own budget to shop for a collector car was limited to $4,000. That was enough to purchase this 1960 Custom Imperial four-door sedan, which Richard, accompanied by sons Lloyd, Zeb and Asa, recently drove five and ...Read More

The Aero Wars come to Ford dealerships: The 1969 Ford Torino Talladega
Posted by Kurt Ernst - 1969 Ford Torino Talladega. Brochure images courtesy Old Car Manual Project. It was the Dodge Charger 500 that fired the first salvo in NASCAR's "Aero Wars" of 1969 and 1970, but Ford wasted little time in shooting back. Though nowhere near as outlandish as the later Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird, the 1969 Ford Torino Talladega (and its Mercury cousin, the Cyclone Spoiler II) proved tough to beat throughout the 1969 season, and thanks to homologation rules, those with the $3,456 asking price could ...Read More

Specifically, according to a historic photo gallery of the San Fernando Valley, this photo depicts the Hollywood Freeway (the 101) just northwest of Vineland Avenue, looking north-ish, in october 1961. Raced by a trio of American legends, a very special Ferrari 750 Monza heads to auction
Posted by Kurt Ernst - Ferrari 750 Monza chassis 0510M. Photos by Darin Schnabel, courtesy RM Sotheby's. It was raced in-period, with impressive success, by Phil Hill, Carroll Shelby and Jim Hall. For the past six decades, it's been in Hall's private collection, and it's reportedly one of the few four-cylinder Ferrari sports racers of the day to retain its original drivetrain. Restored in the mid-1990s, the 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza campaigned by three American racing greats heads to auction in Monterey this August. Ferrari sports ...Read More

Chet Krause spent his entire life in Iola, Wisconsin, where he got his start tearing down Ford Model Ts for salable parts. He bootstrapped those experiences into a long line of books and magazines aimed at hobbyists, mainly of the automotive variety. Krause died Saturday in Iola, having suffered from worsening congestive heart failure, at the age of 92. He left a literary legacy that will endure forever. It began in 1952 when Krause began publishing a m...Read More

With a sleep-inducing introduction awkwardly read from cue cards by Murray, then-president of the American Road Builders' Association, we wonder if the Jam Handy film crew might have scheduled this particular gem after hours. Way after. Even the good dispatcher looks as if he's nodding off, though an alert Trucker Joe seems to have his wits about him. Motoring out of the terminal in his gleaming new Chevy rig, Joe knows his stuff and strictly adhe...Read More

America's Most Individual Car: 1958 Ford Thunderbird brochure
Posted by Mark J. McCourt - Images are from the brochure collection of Hemmings Motor News Ford secured the Thunderbird's future for decades to come when it debuted the second generation in 1958. This small, six-panel fold-out brochure is dated "1/58" and exclusively highlights the new fixed-roof Hardtop model, rather than showing both that and the traditional Convertible; the 1958 Hardtop would eventually outsell the contemporary Convertible by a large margin, moving 35,758 units to the Convertible's 2,134, with these four-seaters' combine...Read More

And if we check out the modern-day street view of the location, we can surmise that the photo was taken from the top of what is now the Ferndale Arts Building. But that's all pretty dry - we need some stories and some color to go along with the scene. So tell us what you see here?...Read More

Detroit park to commemorate Ford Hunger March, key event in auto industry unionization
Posted by Daniel Strohl - Images via MotorCities National Heritage Area, Walter P. Reuther Library. Plans for what will be Detroit's newest park call for plenty of trees and gardens, walkways and reflection pools, even a kayak launch. In all, the plans appear serene and peaceful, a respite from the surrounding industrialization, though the event that the park is intended to commemorate was anything but: one of the bloodier confrontations in Detroit labor history and one of the triggers for the unionization of the auto industry. Hemmings Find of the Day - 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28
Posted by Mike McNessor - The 5.0 Mustang launched a performance subculture in the 1980s spawning magazines, specialty businesses, events, references in Vanilla Ice songs, etc. The Mustang was cheap, fast and begged to be modified. By the end of the decade, the staging lanes at local dragstrips were clogged with Foxes. If you were a Chevrolet person at this time you weren't exactly overwhelmed by the Camaro. It was a decent enough car - it handled really well - but where was the fuel injection? Where were the manual transmissions - it ...Read More

With a Nurburging Nordschliefe lap of 7:46.36 and a 213 MPH top speed, it was once the fastest production car in the world. First exhibited with V-12 power and all-wheel drive, the production version used a twin-turbo V-6 to power its rear wheels only, a design change that prompted lawsuits from potential buyers. Just 275 examples were built from 1992 - '94, with each selling for 470,000 pounds (then, $900,000), which m...Read More

GMC van bearing Banksy mural art estimated to bring up to $400,000 at auction

The pseudononymous street artist Banksy has claimed many a run-in with the police and made authoritarianism a common motif in his artwork, so what better canvas for him than a slab-sided GMC step van that once allegedly served SWAT duty? This week that van and its murals will head to a contemporary art auction in London, where it's expected to become the most expensive step van sold at auction. Posted by Daniel Strohl - Though this 1908 Ford Model T for sale on Hemmings.com may not have been an original stunt parade car from the first half of the 20th Century, it has its own unique history - specifically as a stunt parade car for Disneyland's daily Main Street parades in the early 1960s. Posted by Daniel Strohl - Photo by David Newhardt, courtesy Mecum Auctions. Dick Saunders likely didn't care a lick about labels like Full Classic or particulars like which class he'd park with on the show field. Rather, he probably cared more about how fast he got to the show field in his amalgam of Packard, Auburn, and other old car parts that added up to a boattail speedster that will hit the auction block later this summer. Saunders, of Rensselaer, New York, who had worked for a Packard distributor in Albany, reportedly had a habit...Read More

Perhaps that doesn't depend so much on time passed since the restoration, but on a car's usage since and maintenance of its restoration. For example, this 1961 Chevrolet Corvair 700 Lakewood station wagon for sale on Hemmings.com is coming up on a full decade since its resto, but it still looks like it just rolled out of the shop.
