Lichtmann, who had been retired from the business since 2003, graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a degree in chemical engineering. Early on he worked as a plant manager for a company in Los Angeles that made convertible tops for automobiles and later car covers. When the company changed hands, he struck out on his own.
