World's only running and restored Checker A-4 to debut at Checker Cab Convention
Posted by Daniel Strohl - Photos courtesy Joe Fay. For all the glamour of Hollywood, movie cars generally have a much rougher time: Kept running just long enough to make the next scene without breaking down, many get repainted, re-engined, and reused incessantly. Compared to the punishing and short service life of a taxi, however, it's almost like a vacation, and just such a vacation may have ultimately led to the survival and restoration of one of the last remaining Checker A-4s. Offered from June 1950 through January 1953, the A-4 wa... Read On>>

Hemmings Find of the Day - 1990 Ford Thunderbird 35th Anniversary Super Coupe

Hemmings Find of the Day - 1990 Ford Thunderbird 35th Anniversary Super Coupe
Posted by Kurt Ernst - In 1990, Ford marked the 35th anniversary of the Thunderbird with a special edition of the range-topping Super Coupe. Finished in black with titanium-colored lower panels, a dark blue accent stripe and commemorative "35th Anniversary" badges, just 3,371 examples were built. Ford was serious enough about preventing counterfeit cars that the fender badges were designed to disintegrate if removed, and to protect the cars, each came with a custom-fitted cover supplied by the same company that sews covers for Rolls-Royce...Read On>>

The Mullin Automotive Museum to exhibit "Cars and Carriages"

The Mullin Automotive Museum to exhibit
Posted by Kurt Ernst - A 1910 Renault Landaulette. Photos by Michael Furman, courtesy the Mullin Museum. La Belle poque, or "The Beautiful Period," is generally used to describe a time in Western Europe that stretched from the end of the Franco-Prussian war in 1871 to the 1914 onset of World War I. Marked by peace and prosperity (for some, anyway), the era also saw a marked growth in technology, including the transition from horse-drawn carriages to automobiles. Next month, the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California, will deb...Read On>>

Touge California, North America's only vintage Japanese road rally

Touge California, North America's only vintage Japanese road rally
Posted by Kurt Ernst - 2015 Touge California. Photos by Ben Hsu, courtesy Japanese Nostalgic Car. North America has its share of rally events for classic cars, including the Hemmings-sponsored Great Race, the Colorado Grand and the California Mille. While some events allow owners of vintage Japanese cars to enter, missing was an event dedicated exclusively to classic cars from Japan, at least until May of 2015. Now in its second year, Touge California, created by Japanese Nostalgic Car editor-in-chief Ben Hsu and rally master Patrick...Read On>>

Sweet, Sleek and Sporting Saloon: 1957 MG Magnette
Posted by Mark J. McCourt - Brochure images are from the collection of Hemmings Motor News. Pop quiz: when was the first MG sedan built? MG sedan! you may say, but MG built sports cars! It's true, and the first MG sedan -- saloon, in the Queen's English -- was one of the first cars to wear the MG nameplate, the Morris-based 1925 "Bullnose" 14/28 Super Sports Saloon De Luxe. Indeed, MG had saloons in its catalog all through the 1930s, introducing the KN Magnette Pillarless Saloon with Mazda RX-8-style half rear doors in 1932, and culminating...Read On>>

Bennington, Vermont, 1970s

Bennington, Vermont, 1970s
Posted by Daniel Strohl - There's some downtown revitalization planning going on here in Bennington lately, which probably doesn't mean much to 99 percent of you, but nevertheless benefits 100 percent of you via these carspotting photos we liberated from one of the planning reports and which originally came from the Vermont Division for Historical Preservation. Every foreground building in these photos still stands these days, though that telephone booth hasn't stood there for years, and some of the storefronts have sat empty for some time. ...Read On>>
