Temps will continue to ramp up over the next few days. Some record highs are possible on Saturday. Tomorrow looks sunny and hot with highs in the 90s for much of the state.

Crews from the city of Minneapolis today removed some barriers at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue known as George Floyd Square.

The site had been closed to vehicles and became a memorial after Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer there last year. Community organizer Steve Floyd is a co-founder of the Agape Movement, which has provided security in the area. He says the community wanted to see the area reopened to make it more safe.

But many said they were opposed to the move. Angela Harrelson, George Floyd's aunt who lives in the Twin Cities, says she never got notice from the city about reopening the square and called the city's actions divisive.

Activists plan to hold a rally at George Floyd Square tonight and some helped rebuild barriers where the city had removed them.

New COVID-19 case numbers in Minnesota are again low, with fewer than 300 new cases reported every day so far this week.

The state has 238 newly reported cases of COVID-19, with the daily average this week around 250 new cases per day. There were ten new deaths reported, four of which were in long-term care. This comes after two days of no reported COVID-19 deaths in the state.

On the vaccination front, the state is slowly edging toward 65 percent of people over 16 having at least one dose of the vaccine. 

The seven-day average for new cases is down almost 70 percent since mid-May.
