| The year 1936 was decisive for Herbert List: the Nuremberg Racial Laws were announced the year before and private life in Germany became very regulated. Artist friends of his youth like Erika and Klaus Mann, or Andreas Feininger had left. The partJewish photographer received warnings that his openly gay life and his contempt for the Nazis were reported to the Gestapo. |

Almost overnight he left Germany and with it his bourgeois existence as a coffee merchant in his family’s enterprise. List made a quick escape to Switzerland, then to the Italian Riviera. Images of this trip, like "Master and Dog" in Portofino or the "Sunglasses" at Lake Lucerne, suggest peace and tranquility paired with the beauty of life and companionship. Unfortunately, the summer of 1936 passed rather quickly for List and with it, reality set in that his life outside of Germany had to be recreated. Substituting his secure Hanseatic life for the adventure of an artists life under the mediterranean sun must have been strenuous, but it finally paid off. The ambitious leisure time photographer became a professional amateur, whose body of work is not thinkable without the danger of loosing friends, family and home during his exile years.
The show "Part escape, part desire" gathers images of the first twelve years of Lists work and presents a young mans creative route to his exile in Greece. It creates a visual tour of his progress as an artist during this time of exploration, hardship, and gained freedom.
