Don't expect to get a sense of who is winning the primary elections when the polls close in Utah at 8 pm next Tuesday. Utah lawmakers added a provision in a bill, passed in one of the April special sessions, that bars any release of election results until 10 pm on election day.

In the face of a rising number of coronavirus cases in Utah, Gov. Gary Herbert said Wednesday he would not consider any requests from local governments to loosen COVID-19 related restrictions for two weeks. Herbert also said he would mandate the wearing of face masks in some state facilities.

Coronavirus rages

A new model predicts America will see 180,000 deaths from the coronavirus by October unless pretty much everyone starts wearing a mask in public [Bloomberg].

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will quarantine visitors from states where the coronavirus is on the rise for 14-days. The list of virus hot spots includes Utah [NBC News].

Dozens of Secret Service agents have been told to self-quarantine following President Trump's rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma [WaPo].

The Trump administration is considering scaling back the national emergency they declared earlier this year in response to the coronavirus pandemic [LA Times].

The nationwide Black Lives Matter protests have not led to a spike in coronavirus cases [CNN].


2020 Election

Vice President Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump by 14 points nationally according to a new poll [NYT].

Biden also leads Trump by at least six percentage points in every battleground state [NYT].

Black Americans favor Biden over Trump by a massive 92-5 margin according to a new poll [WaPo].

Biden leads Trump by 8 points in Wisconsin [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel].

Democrats will not hold a traditional convention with thousands of attendees. Instead, the mostly virtual convention will still be anchored in Milwaukee, but state delegations are asked to do their business remotely [Politico].


Justice Department

A federal appeals court ordered a lower-court judge to drop the felony false-statement case against former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn. The ruling comes after Attorney General William Barr moved to pull the plug on Flynn's prosecution after he had twice pled guilty to lying to the FBI [USA Today].

Attorney General Barr agreed to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on July 28 [Axios].


Economy

The U.S. economic recovery seems to be slowing down in states experiencing a surge in coronavirus cases [Bloomberg].

Disney now says they will postpone the reopening of Disneyland indefinitely amid surging coronavirus cases in California [CNN].
