Your daily COVID-19 update

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Get out of here.” — Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to a former supporter, after she protested his handling of the worsening COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed more than 38,000 lives. The video of the interaction has gone viral.

The number of Canadians infected with COVID-19 has passed 96,000, while 7,800 people have died. Worldwide, 7.3 million people have been infected and 412,000 have died.

It’s been 90 days since COVID-19 was officially designated as a pandemic. On March 11, the NBA suspended its season, the markets tanked and Canada had its 100th case of COVID-19. Maclean’s delves into the data of the last three months to mark the moment, and show how far we’ve come.

"In the beginning, we were really shooting blind," said Dr. Blair Schwartz, an intensive care specialist, in a CBC article about how Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital spent the last three months figuring out what worked and what didn’t when it came to treating COVID-19 patients. "This is a new disease. There are no world experts in it. A lot of us are learning as we're going."

The agri-food industry in Ontario is the focus of a growing outbreak of COVID-19. At least 200 temporary migrant workers on farms in Essex County have tested positive in recent weeks, the Toronto Star reports.

As the United States pushes forward with reopening, the number of hospitalizations is growing. A dozen states have reported their highest averages of new cases since the crisis started. “Bringing folks back to work—while necessary for economic recovery—is fraught. Americans may be moving on, but the virus is not,” says this analysis in the Washington Post.

Are we willing to wear ankle bracelets to help the government track the virus? This human rights lawyer argues that the more in-our-faces surveillance is, the less likely we are to forget about it—and the less likely we are to let the government keep doing it when the pandemic finally passes.

“Think inside the cardboard box” was a natural headline for this article about how a British firm that makes cardboard pallets and boxes has shifted to a new product line aimed at the COVID-19-era workplace, including desk dividers made of cardboard with clear polyester film windows.

The headlines of COVID-19 and other world events can sometimes crowd out positive stories, such as this Reuters article, and its accompanying video, which explain how researchers used drones to count the world’s largest colony of nesting green turtles, while they were waiting to lay eggs on a coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef off of Australia. They discovered that the colony was nearly double the size of their previous estimates.

How can the U.S. hold a free and fair election?

David Moscrop: The U.S. could lean into postal voting, which is far safer than its in-person variant. But of course President Trump opposes that.
