Wind chill warnings are in effect and will cover most of the northern United States at some point through this weekend. Wind chills in the minus 30s and minus 40s will cover much of the Upper Midwest. The wind chill factor may hit minus 50 Friday in the Dakotas. Get the latest on Updraft.

Descendants of executed Dakota 38+2 ride to Mankato to honor ancestors

For what may be the last time, Dakota riders on horseback are braving bitter December weather to travel hundreds of miles to honor 38 men hanged in the largest mass execution in U.S. history. The ride also remembers the many others who died as a result of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. MPR News reporter Hannah Yang and visual Journalist Ben Hovland tagged along.

Blizzard conditions lead to highway closures in Minnesota
Highways across a large swath of southern Minnesota were shut down overnight amid whiteout conditions. “Winds will increase later this morning. Don’t let your guard down today,” the Weather Service’s Twin Cities office cautioned early Friday.
 
What else we're watching:
Twin Cities welcomes more Ukrainian refugees than any other metro area in the U.S. Minnesotans have formed about 1,500 sponsorship groups to support Ukrainians trying to build a new life here, said Annie Nolte-Henning, director of the Americas for Alight, a non-profit that supports refugees as they resettle.
