If God is not God, we will ourselves become gods and create strange gods. Why wouldn’t we? If God is not God, we will also demonize others as a way of validating our fragile identity. Such a pattern has become increasingly apparent in human history. Only an entrance into the Great Compassion frees us from the need to divide our reality into the good guys and the bad guys. Or as Jesus puts it, “be children of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on the bad as well as the good, and sends down rain to fall on the upright and the wicked alike” (Matthew 5:45).
