>It was a young adulthood that promised little on the surface. Karol Wojtyła was working in a quarry. His father, who been the last remaining member of his immediate family, had recently died, and the Nazis had closed the university where Karol had studied. It was during this time that Karol met a fellow parishioner, Jan Tyranowski. While Karol originally was put off by the tailor’s mystic spirituality, a friendship developed and Jan became his mentor. Sometimes, young people are suspicious of those who have an intense relationship with God. But if we live our faith authentically and openly with words and actions, we may plant some amazing seeds.
Talk with a young adult about a service opportunity you can do together—volunteer at a food pantry, circulate a petition, participate in a walk or march. Ask about his or her dreams and goals.
