| | | | Dear Mozilla Supporter,
You don’t need us to tell you — misinformation spreading all over social media is a huge and growing problem these days. From vaccine hesitancy to climate change denial and election falsehoods, misinformation can cause real harm.
That’s one of the reasons we ran our YouTube Regrets campaign. More than 37,000 people have helped us better understand harmful YouTube recommendations, many of which were misinformation.
In July we published our research into YouTube, and it made major waves. But to change YouTube’s practices, and stop harmful recommendations, we’re going to need to take this campaign to the next level. Help us get there. We’re asking for your support to intensify pressure on YouTube by doubling the number of people participating in this work. Yes, I'll donate We launched our YouTube RegretsReporter project last fall based on reports from hundreds of supporters like you, who told us about YouTube’s recommendation system leading them down bizarre and sometimes dangerous rabbit holes.
Then last month we released the results of our 10-month investigation. We learned YouTube routinely recommends videos to people that violate its very own content policies. And the videos YouTube does recommend are far more likely to be misleading, harmful, or offensive than videos users find for themselves.
Our campaign made headlines around the world, from the Wall Street Journal and NPR, to NBC and El PaÃs. Now the pressure is on YouTube to be more transparent about how its algorithm works (which they’ve resisted in the past), and give users more control.
Persuading YouTube to operate more honestly and transparently won’t be easy. It’s going to take more people, more media coverage, and more money. So we hope you’ll chip in by making a contribution to the Mozilla Foundation today. Yes, I'll contribute As a non-profit organization, Mozilla relies on grassroots financial support from people like you to carry out our mission. We’re proud to be effective stewards of your contributions; we’ve received four out of four stars from Charity Navigator, and a Gold Seal of Transparency from Guidestar.
With your support, Mozilla will be able to continue and expand our work to fight misinformation, and keep the web healthy, welcoming and wonderful for all. So we hope you can set up a recurring donation today. Yes, I'll chip in Thanks in advance for any support you can provide,
Juan Barajas Director, Fundraising & Partnerships Mozilla Foundation
