Here's to the Othermothers

I don’t have children of my own, yet I often find myself listening to the stories chldren tell, walking with teens through heartache, and finding creative ways to get my nieces to eat their dinner. In seminary, the shift happened where the vast majority of my friends were with married women, most of which had kids. I learned to schedule hang-outs after bedtime and roll with the punches when someone throws up.

In “I Won't Be My Baby's Only Mother,” Liuan Huska encourages moms to let the “othermothers” help with the task of child-rearing. As Christians, we are community-focused people. God Himself is community in the three persons of the Trinity working together in relationship.

Motherhood is hard enough, but when we believe we’re in it alone, it can make the challenge even greater. One of my greatest honors is helping raise the next generation, and even if I never have kids that share my genes, it makes me grateful to help build the Kingdom one meal, board game, and meltdown at a time.
