Tonight’s Premieres ABC: The Great Christmas Light Fight at 8p A&E: Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On at 9p Great American Country: Building Alaska at 9p NBC: Making It at 10p Tonight’s Finale AXS TV: The X Factor: Celebrity at 8p IN THE NEWS Thursday’s NFL game between the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys was the most-watched Thanksgiving Day game on CBS Sports in 27 years, with an average 32.54 million viewers P2+. That’s up +22% from last year’s game on the net, according to Nielsen fast nationals. It was the most-watched regular season game on any network in three years. It’s back to work at HGTV’s Windy City Rehab. The city of Chicago had issued stop work orders over the summer for the renovation show, citing building violations, but nearly a dozen of those orders have been lifted, allowing co-stars Alison Victoria and Donovan Eckhardt to resume work on existing rehabs. HGTV renewed the hit series in February. Repercussions from the departure of Gabrielle Union from America’s Got Talent continued over the holiday weekend. Union, who was cut from the NBC show after one season, had expressed concerns over racially insensitive segments and been critiqued for her appearance, according to Variety. Among those tweeting in her defense was Will & Grace star Debra Messing, who posted, “Yes, women become ‘difficult,’ when their insistence on a respectful and professional working environment, is ignored.” In a statement, NBC and producer Fremantle said, “America’s Got Talent has a long history of inclusivity and diversity in both our talent and the acts championed by the show. The judging and host line-up has been regularly refreshed over the years and that is one of the reasons for AGT’s enduring popularity. NBC and the producers take any issues on set seriously.” Julianne Hough, who was let go from AGT along with Union, saw her experience differently. “I had a wonderful time on America’s Got Talent. I loved working with the cast, crew and producers,” said Hough; she and brother Derek are starring in NBC’s Holidays with the Houghs, airing December 16. Roseanne Barr may be radioactive in some circles after posting a series of racially charged tweets that got her ABC show canceled in 2018, but the comedian still has fans in high places. Barr landed a gig speaking at the “Trumpettes” gala at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, reports the Palm Beach Post, an event honoring the president. “If there was ever anybody who really put their mouth on the line and said how much she loves the president, she is one of them,” Trumpettes founder Toni Holt Kramer told the paper. “You can’t get a hotter name in town.” The gala takes place February 1, the day before the Super Bowl in Miami. The Twitter account of another disgraced TV superstar, Bill Cosby, encouraged his followers to avoid major news outlets and subscribe to black-owned media options. “No longer should we succumb to the fear of many mainstream media outlets like Associated Press, CNN, NBC, New York Times, Washington Post & Radar Online just to name a few,” said Cosby’s Twitter account. Another post read, “It’s #BlackFriday, so lets spend our dollars with #BlackPressUSA & all Black media outlets that propel the truth and the facts, not Fake News.” The messages follow Cosby’s interview in BlackPressUSA.com, in which he called the case for which he is serving time in prison for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in 2004 a “set-up,” and expressed no remorse. Hulu has a Black Friday offer for new subscribers: $1.99 per month for its ad-supported basic tier service plan. Interested cord-cutters had better act quickly - the deal, which can’t be combined with other offers or its Disney bundle, ends today. |

ITV will explore iconic London hotel The Savoy in a docu-series produced by Gordon Ramsay’s (Hell’s Kitchen) Studio Ramsay. The five-parter will be filmed using fixed-rig cameras, offering “extraordinary insight into the real drama and intrigue of one of the world’s most glamourous hotels,” said ITV’s Kate Teckman. All3media international has signed pre-sale deals for White House Farm, the upcoming factual drama, including the acquisition of digital rights in the US by WarnerMedia for HBO Max. Vivendi Entertainment and French TV production company Pernel Media announced that Smithsonian Channel has come onboard 4K docu-drama series Secrets of the Pyramid Builders as a coproduction partner. The French media group ordered the series for its C8 and Planète+ channels; Vivendi Entertainment is distributing the program globally. Preschool educational and entertainment digital platform Hopster completed a substantial equity investment round from Sandbox & Co. and Venture Founders Ltd. Following the transaction, Sandbox & Co. will now hold a majority stake in the business. Hopster plans to accelerate its strategic partnerships with global distribution companies in both the telco and pay-TV spaces while investing in acquisitions and original content. TECH TALK Some older Roku models will no longer be supported by Netflix, starting today. Owners of Roku SD (N1050); Roku HD-XR (N1101); Roku HD (N1100, 2000C); and Roku XD (2050X, 2050N, 2100X, 2100N) will need to upgrade to access the streamer. According to cybersecurity company CHEQ, bot attacks will cost online businesses $10 billion by year’s end. Highlights from the report include: - Global web sales are expected to reach $3.4 trillion in 2019; 6% of these sales ($207.18 billion) are at risk from bot attacks in 2019.
- 5% of this revised revenue at risk will be lost, creating $10 billion loss globally.
- Despite the online economic boom expected on Black Friday and Cyber Monday – last year $14 billion was spent in online sales across both days – these gains will be nearly wiped out by the yearly economic costs from bot attacks.
Let the memes begin: Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram suffered worldwide disruptions and outages on Thanksgiving, due to what the company described as an issue in one of its central software systems. #InstagramDown began trending on Twitter, with brands jumping into the fray. “Don’t make me talk to my family,” posted Slim Jim. The issue was resolved by 3p ET. ADVERTISING Demand for linear TV ads will grow in 2020 thanks to the California Consumer Privacy Act, predicts Michael Collette, CEO, data science firm Dativa. “Digital advertising faces the greatest complications from CCPA,” Collette tells Cynopsis. “The digital ad model has been built around achieving 1:1 reach on a massive scale by relying on third-party data sources to create digital identities for millions of individuals, using cookies, device IDs and ad IDs for each. Unlike digital ads, DDL is focused on leveraging smaller, more accurate and robust audience data sets to target ads while applying highly accurate first-party customer data sets to measure attribution. New privacy regulations in 2020 will hamper digital’s capabilities, leaving the broadcast industry poised to easily expand data-driven TV in a privacy-safe manner and shift the advertising pendulum back to linear.” (Look for more 2020 predictions from industry thought leaders in the Cynopsis year-end roundup.) ZypMedia reports local advertisers are increasing use of OTT, especially during the holidays. Findings include: - Consumers are more engaged with digital ads over the holidays, both with video completion rate and clicks.
- Campaigns that leverage both display and OTT have already seen a 34% increase in 2019, and are expected to continue to grow throughout the remainder of the quarter.
- When compared where digital ads were delivered (mobile web, mobile app, desktop or CTV), a more even distribution between the devices in October. CTV is dominating the device mix over the week before and the week of Thanksgiving promotions, as well as the week before and the week of Christmas.
COMING UP Original movie Sacrifice premieres on BET+ Thursday, December 19. Legal thriller stars Paula Patton (Hitch). STREAMING HBO Max grabbed US rights to UK true crime drama White House Farm, which tells the story of members of the same family murdered at an Essex farmhouse. Six-parter will air in 2020. Amazon ordered a second season of Indian original The Family Man, about a man who secretly works as a spy. Series launched in September. Asian video streamer Viu will offer content from Discovery, Discovery Asia, Animal Planet, HGTV, Food Network and TLC. Shows like Cake Boss, Gold Rush and Dr. Pimple Popper will be available in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. “Our earlier collaboration with Viu on No Sleep No FOMO provided us with a deeper understanding of Viu’s expanding user base across the region and the high-quality service it provides,” said Anna Pak, VP and GM for Southeast Asia, Discovery Networks Asia Pacific. “This is particularly important to us as a premium brand and our efforts to offer our modernized Asian Food Network content to a broader audience.” Singapore’s mm2 Entertainment is launching a free, ad-supported streaming service, mPlay Asia, focused on short-form video. The service is slated to debut in April. A data breach hit UK-based audio streaming platform Mixcloud, reports TechCrunch. The breach occurred in November, and left over 20 million user accounts exposed after the data was put on sale on the dark web. |
