It’s just such a great thing to be able to start my day playing the greatest music ever written, to people all over Australia.
Some of the music is nearly a thousand years old… Some of it is literally being written right now, by composers living in Australia. People you might bump into in the supermarket!
Music has always been part of my life – my parents both took part in amateur operatics, and the piano at home always seemed to have someone playing it, particularly when relatives were visiting. And so I grew up with music woven into everything I did – I play the tuba and piano, and had great fun as a teenager and in my twenties, playing in orchestras and bands. (The social life was great too by the way...)
But you absolutely don’t need a background in classical music to enjoy it and for it to mean something to you. In fact, you might have listened to a lot of the music we play on ABC Classic, without realising it. Movie and TV soundtracks, music from video games, the big orchestral sounds you sometimes hear in adverts. They’re all part of the sound of ABC Classic. There’ll be something you know – and plenty to discover.
The music on ABC Classic can be exciting, invigorating, soothing and calming . It’s welcoming and above all else, it’s very human. Music written by people who lived and thought very much like you and me, regardless of when and where they were alive. People who wanted to bring beauty into the world.
