Thursday 29 July 2021 Mayor's MessageI was delighted to have taken part this month in the City’s celebration of the rich history, culture and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with a NAIDOC Week (4–11 July) Flag Raising Ceremony. Whadjuk Noongar man Derek Nannup delivered a moving Acknowledgment of Country and played Didgeridoo for a small number of City staff and Councillors, in line with COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time. We look forward to welcoming our community to a free public event on 17 August from 11am to 12.30pm at the Wanneroo Civic Centre. The traditional Welcome to Country and Flag Raising Ceremony will be an important opportunity for us to gather to acknowledge the traditional owners of this land and reflect on how we can all contribute towards reconciliation. Mayor Tracey Roberts JP Hinckley Park redevelopment completeThe City recently completed a $1.4 million redevelopment of Hinckley Park in Hocking, including the addition of a new path network, playground equipment, basketball court, nature play space and shade structures, as well as over 10,000 shrubs and trees. One focus of the redevelopment was access and inclusion, with footpaths, barbecue areas and play spaces designed to be accessible for those with a wide range of abilities. With more people choosing to call the City of Wanneroo home every year, the City is proud to deliver another beautiful open space for everyone in our community to enjoy. New Waste Services Guide out nowOver 61,000 garden organics (GO) bins have been delivered and we're thrilled to see our residents embracing the change! Hocking resident Joan, an avid gardener and 'earth cycler', is happy to see the City divert precious resources from landfill. “I put leaves and lawn clippings in my compost bin, but a lot of what’s in the GO bin has come off the lemon tree and lime tree, which were overgrowing and had to be trimmed back,” she said. To help you put your waste in the right place, don't forget to consult our new Waste Services Guide. This handy booklet has been delivered to all residents and is available for download from our website. For the first time, the guide has also been made available in ten different languages, for residents for whom English is a second language.
