High on a mountainside above L.A., visionary architect Richard Neutra built a modestly proportioned International Style pavilion in 1960 for an artist and an engineer. The modernist residence, owned by a Belgian art collector with a savvy interest in iconic experimental residences, is today a time capsule that remains true to the original design. In Wyoming, another glass-walled home takes a more grandiose approach to modernism, with 8,600 square feet of gleaming, light-filled living space under a crescent-shaped roof on 36 pristine acres of prime fly fishing along the Snake River. And in the U.K., a series of customizable houseboats push the modernist vernacular that Neutra helped define toward minimalism, with 10 smartly arranged floating homes that measure just 215 to a bit more than 500 square feet.
