George F. Koob ARCR is commemorating the 50th Anniversary of NIAAA with a special series of articles (Festschrift). The final article in this series is based on a presentation by NIAAA Director Dr. George F. Koob during a 2-day symposium celebrating NIAAAs 50th Anniversary.
The creation of NIAAA in 1970 was a milestone in public health history. Since then, the Institute has helped change the way alcohol misuse and alcohol use disorder are viewed and has become the worlds largest funder of alcohol research. Guest editor Dr. Koob summarizes some of this progress over the last 50 years as well as persistent challenges. The editorial also shares highlights from the seven articles in this NIAAA 50th Anniversary Festschrift that represent a small sample of NIAAA-funded achievements.
