Picture this: You’ve just finished breakfast and it’s time to leave for school. Rather than walking to the bus stop or getting into a car, you put on your backpack and start your 10 and a half-mile hike to the school building. It’s between a 2.5 to 3-hour climb, since you’re used to it by now, and the equivalent of 200 flights of stairs. Sounds extreme, right?
In the rural community of Marre à Coiffe, Haiti, students, teachers, and community members make this trek almost daily, either to get to school, to see the doctor, or to collect clean water. Hope for Haiti created the Hike for Haiti Challenge in 2019 to bring awareness and fundraise for education, healthcare, and infrastructure projects in southern Haiti, in communities just like (and including) this one.
