Hello Fellow Woodworkers!
I hope all your projects for the new year are well underway and you are enjoying the experience.
Next weekend HNT Gordon will be demonstrating their tools at the Perth wood school on Sat 2 April so feel free to come and try our planes and pick up some tips to help you with your woodwork. We will be demonstrating how to get wood straight, square and smooth without tearout, as well as using joinery planes and making mouldings. We will have some tools for sale and if we don't have what you are after we will be able to post it to you. Colen clenton will also be there with his Marking out tools for you to try and and buy. Also Henry Eckert,Japanese tools and the timber bloke will be there along with other wood groups.
On the Sunday I will be doing two classes, using hand planes in the morning which covers planing wood surfaces flat and tearout free. We will have planes there to use or you can bring your own. Similarly if you are having problems with planing a certain type of wood feel free to bring the wood along.
In the afternoon we will be doing a class on how to use planes for doing joinery in furniture. We will cover making simple rebates on end grain, straight housings (dado) and finish with a tapered sliding dovetail joint. These are very old techniques they used in small run factories to make furniture many years ago and were replaced with machines when mass production came into vogue. You will be surprised at how efficient you can make these joints with the correct hand planes, namely a dado plane and side rebate plane.
For more details on the timber and tools day or to book in for the courses please contact Perth Wood School.
The following weekend 9 - 10th april we will be down at the Melbourne Guild of fine woodworking for their Hand Tool Event where we will be doing the same demonstrations as above. Colen Clenton won't be attending but we will have some of their tools there. Also attending will be Tom Figden from the unplugged workshop in Canada and you will also see Henry Eckert's, Japanese tools and Chris Vesper's range of tools.
On the following Monday I will be teaching two classes, one in the morning and one in the evening on using Hollows and Rounds for making Mouldings. For more details on the Hand Tool Event or to book in for the Hollows and Rounds course please contact the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking. These classes don't happen very often so if you are interested in this facet of woodworking don't miss out.
Hope to see you at one of these events.
