QUESTIONS ANSWERED | Impact of Arizona's 1864 abortion law |
| | The 1864 law has raised questions on the legality of abortion in Arizona. Credit: Getty Images | On Tuesday, the Arizona Supreme Court reinstated a law from 1864 that bans nearly all abortions in the state. The 19th Century law - which predates Arizona becoming a US state - makes performing an abortion punishable by two to five years in prison, except when the mother's life is at risk. |
| | What is the current limit on abortion in Arizona? | The procedure has been available and legal in the state up to 15 weeks of pregnancy. | When does the 1864 law enters into effect? | It remains to be seen when or how it would be enforced. The court has put the law on hold for 14 days and sent the case back to a lower court to hear additional arguments. On top of that, there is a 45-day period before enforcement. Arizona’s attorney general, a Democrat, has also promised not to prosecute those who seek or provide an abortion. | Can the law be overturned? | Time will tell, but there is a strong possibility. In the majority opinion, the judges stated that "policy matters of this gravity must ultimately be resolved by our citizens through the legislature or the initiative process". This puts the ball in the court of state legislators, who could cancel the ban. It also opens the possibility for voters to decide on the issue via a ballot measure in November. | | Election issue: Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is walking a tightrope on abortion rights. He condemned Arizona's decision as going "too far", while defending the overturning of Roe v Wade. End of Roe v Wade: The US Supreme Court's decision in 2022 to overturn the ruling that enshrined the nationwide right to abortion has changed the country in four ways. The other 19th Century law: Anti-abortion activists in the US want to enforce the 1873 Comstock Act to ban the procedure across the country. | |

| France beefs up security after threats | | France has experienced many devastating Islamist incidents in recent years, Credit: Reuters | Warnings that the Islamic State (IS) group might be planning an attack on football venues prompted France to strengthen security around the Parc des Princes ahead of Wednesday's Champion's League quarter-final. The match is just one of a series of sporting events to be held in Paris, which is hosting the Olympic Games in July. |
| | Andrew Harding, Paris correspondent |
| | Two fans who had come from Toulouse ahead of the PSG-Barcelona match were quick to brush aside the risks. "We live constantly under the threat of terrorists and attacks so we have not stopped ourselves from living and coming to a superb match even after these threats," said Julien, 21.
Finding the right balance between security preparations and public reassurance is never easy, and France faces some particularly tricky challenges with the Olympic Games due to begin with an unprecedented opening ceremony along the river Seine in the heart of Paris in little more than 100 days. |

The event, whose name translates to "festival of breaking the fast", marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a time dedicated to fasting, worship, and spiritual reflection. In Gaza, however, joyous celebrations only exist as memories. |
