A roundup of a busy news day in South Louisiana.
with Matthew Albright | Assistant metro editorGood morning! Yesterday was a busy news day for South Louisiana. Here's some of the biggest highlights so you're all up to speed. A storm-weary city floods again: Lake Charles, which is still recovering from a catastrophic year of multiple massive hurricanes, was flooded again Monday. Up to 12 inches of rain fell in some places, deluging streets and putting water into homes and businesses. You can read about it here from Mike Smith, a veteran journalist who we just brought on board to tell the story of Lake Charles' recovery. You can read more about Mike's mission and sign up for his weekly newsletter here. A major court ruling: When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional a Louisiana law that allowed non-unanimous juries to convict criminal defendants, it left open a big question: Should everyone convicted by such a jury get a new trial? On Monday, the Court answered that question — with a no. This story explains the Court's reasoning and what it means for our state. Farewell to a former governor: Gov. Buddy Roemer, one of the state's most unconventional leaders, has died. This story explores his legacy, and explains how his style was so different from most Louisiana governors. We can't bring you these stories without the help of our subscribers. If you want to help local journalism thrive, check out our latest offers here. Thanks for reading, and have a great day! |
