Fatboy Slim Takes 5, Amanda Palmer joins Double J and all the Grammys news you need
The Grammys is a shambles. If you've been paying any attention to international music news in the past few weeks, you've probably come across the latest mess that the Recording Academy – the organisation that presents the Grammys – has found itself in. Even if you leave the awful allegations of sexual harassment aside, the ceremony itself was again bloated and full of head-scratchingly odd moments this year. (Why was there a tribute to Prince? And why did they get Usher to do it?) It's easy to be critical of the Grammys. But it's also easy to be critical of the ARIAs. I've never taken much interest, but it's probably easy to be critical of the Brit Awards, France's Grand Prix du Disque and the Korean Music Awards too. Do you see where I'm going with this? Just because we've seemingly always had these awards, doesn't mean they are necessarily the best thing for music in 2020. Maybe it's time to dismantle the concept and think about how we can celebrate the gloriously broad and diverse communities that make up a nation's music scene, without handing out statues. People in high places will tell you that we'll miss awards ceremonies when they're gone. But often people in high places are the only ones who stand to benefit from these events anyway. The world is changing. The music industry is changing. Maybe music awards ceremonies just do not need to be a part of our future. There's gotta be a better way to celebrate the amazing music that comes out every day, and those who make it. |
