In 2021 alone, the U.S. had nearly 49,000 gun-related deaths, and that number has been growing, according to the CDC. At the same time, 40 percent of all American households own guns. Could we save lives and soothe heated debates by applying a public health approach to the epidemic of gun violence? “If you actually want to talk about saving lives, it’s about finding ways to work together with people who may have different belief systems from you,” says Megan Ranney, academic dean at Brown University’s School of Public Health.
