| The west rotunda steps of Salt Lake City's Capitol building were teeming with faith groups this past Thursday in a demonstration calling on state lawmakers to take action this legislative session to protect Utah's Great Salt Lake. The participants, many of whom held signs reading "defend our future" and "save our Great Salt Lake," included leaders and members from varying spiritual and religious groups. "It is clear that the ecological crisis facing the Great Salt Lake is also a crisis of faith,” said Rev. Monica Dobbins, a representative for Utah’s Unitarian Universalist congregations. “Our principles of justice and equity require action to protect people by using water more wisely and with more gratitude.” Rios Pacheco, a spiritual leader for the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, emphasized the importance of human connection to nature. "Our people respect the water,” Pacheco said. “Each time we go to the water, we respect it by giving an offering to thank our Creator for giving us this life.” Read more about the demonstration and other faith's perspectives on saving the Great Salt Lake.
