HOW BAD IS WILDFIRE SMOKE?

Smoke from more than 100 wildfires burning across Canada has been affecting the air quality in North American cities far from the flames. 

THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH WILDFIRE SMOKE
ARE NUMEROUS AND SERIOUS
Even at low concentrations, wildfire smoke is hazardous. People with lung conditions, as well as children and the elderly should avoid outdoor activities.

 

THE CHEMISTRY OF FIRES
The pollution from burning shrub land and forest fires would be made up of carbonaceous particulates in the form of black smoke and resultant chemical compounds from burning sap from the trees or tree material.
Resultant fires in urban areas, burning of homes, cars and other structures produce other chemical compounds that can be hazardous.

INHALING WILDFIRE SMOKE
With exposure to wildfire smoke, you might get some irritation in the nose and throat or itchy eyes, which is a sign of an inflammatory response by your immune system. 

If you’re a healthy individual, going for a bike ride or a hike in light haze probably won’t be a big deal and your body will be able to recover.

Wildfire smoke, especially for elderly people or people with with underlying health conditions, should be a concern and wearing a mask is the simplest way to keep you safe.
