Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix was one of the worst days that Formula 1 has endured for quite a while. A two-lap ‘race’ behind a safety car and the shortest Grand Prix in history was an unedifying spectacle.

The blame game can be played but, ultimately, the weather decided that conditions were not safe to race in. That we didn’t go racing at any point was quite correct; Spa is not the place to make any reckless decisions.

However, the complexity of rulebook played its part in putting race director Michael Masi in a hole and he did the best he could in an almost impossible situation. That created the shambles of the handful of laps behind a safety car and half points. Improvements in this area must be made – including having the provision to have an extra day if it gets rained out again.

Now it’s on to the much-anticipated return of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort – a revised track layout with some high-speed banked corners. Fingers crossed for a smooth weekend this time ...
