NARVESON | Staff writer Recovery: This week, leaders celebrated the strides southwest Lousiana has made in recovering from the historic slew of disasters that struck Lake Charles and the region, beginning with Hurricane Laura on Aug. 27, 2020. At the Lake Charles Event Center on Tuesday, local officials, representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and state agencies tasked with recovery and others involved in rebuilding the region, discussed lessons learned and achievements made over the past four years. One ongoing problem is getting those who were displaced back home. Read the full story. The citizens of Vacherie had been praying for rain. And around 3 p.m. on August 24, 1924, it appeared their prayers had been answered. But that day became one of the town’s most horrific. As residents sheltered in the newly built St. Philip Catholic Church and the former church beside it, a tornado ripped through and destroyed the old building. Seven people died and two others later succumbed to their injuries.
