It began 15 years ago, when a veteran coach arrived in Montreal to turn Canada into a serious tennis nation. When Louis Borfiga joined Tennis Canada, the sport’s governing body could only dream of a Canadian player infiltrating the top 50 global rankings. But what seemed like a miracle at the time is now the norm. In the words of Sylvain Bruneau, who coached Bianca Andreescu during her dazzling run at the 2019 U.S. Open, “Someone had to shake the tree.”
Today, the country’s new class of stars are honing a playing style that is decidedly unCanadian. It’s brash. Aggressive. Impolite.
