CLE climate: The risk of severe climate hazards and natural disasters in many regions of the United States stands in sharp contrast to Greater Cleveland and the rest of the Great Lakes, where hurricanes, drought, earthquakes and the like pose little concern. Peter Krouse reports several organizations are trying to capitalize on Cleveland’s relatively boring climate to lure businesses.
Mayoral campaign: The Cleveland mayor’s race has a packed field of candidates separated by the slimmest of margins and has been complicated by the resurgent coronavirus pandemic. So there was little in the way of traditionally big campaign events over the weekend heading into Tuesday’s mayoral primary, reports Seth Richardson. Six candidates have a viable chance of finishing in the top two and moving on to the general election.
City Council: Councilman Blaine Griffin, long-rumored as outgoing Council President Kevin Kelley’s likely successor, and Ward 3 Councilman Kerry McCormack are vying to be Cleveland City Council’s next president, Courtney Astolfi reports. They are playing a financial hand in ward races across the city.
Ken Mills: A jury on Friday found former Cuyahoga County Jail Director Ken Mills guilty of negligently mismanaging the jail and lying to Cuyahoga County Council in the run-up to a historic series of inmate deaths in 2018. Cory Shaffer reports Mills now faces a potential sentence of more than a year behind bars. Mills was acquitted of third-degree felony tampering with records that carried a potential three-year prison sentence. Jurors found him guilty of misdemeanor falsification and dereliction of duty charges. This Week in the CLE: Ohio Republican leaders have proposed district maps that preserve their supermajority in the Statehouse, despite new rules meant to discourage partisan gerrymandering. And Gov. Mike DeWine serves on the commission that made it happen. We’re talking about DeWine’s failed leadership throughout the redistricting process, on This Week in the CLE, cleveland.com’s daily half-hour news podcast.
Redistricting costs: Ohio lawmakers have spent more than $173,000 on consultants, mapping software, high-end computers, hotels and other redistricting-related costs as they continue to work on redrawing Ohio’s political maps, records show. Andrew Tobias reports House and Senate Democrats have spent $115,400 on redistricting-related expenses so far, while Republicans have spent $42,380, according to documents obtained through a public records request.
Redistricting hearing: The Cleveland area will host a public hearing on Republicans’ new state legislative map proposal days before a legal deadline to pass it. Andrew Tobias reports the hearing is scheduled for 4 p.m. today at Cuyahoga Community College’s Corporate College East, 4400 Richmond Road in Warrensville Heights. Members of the Ohio Redistricting Commission -- or their appointed replacements -- will hear testimony from members of the public, and especially are calling on people with expertise in any relevant subject areas.
Vaccine mandate: President Joe Biden announced Thursday that the Department of Labor will mandate all companies with 100 or more employees to require their workforce be vaccinated or show weekly negative coronavirus tests. Sabrina Eaton reports that the announcement got a critical reception from organizations that represent Ohio employers, while prompting lawsuit threats from Republicans who question its constitutionality.
Judge endorsements: The Ohio Republican Party’s central committee on Friday endorsed Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy to become the court’s chief justice in the 2022 general election, reports Jeremy Pelzer. The party’s central committee also endorsed Justices Pat DeWine and Pat Fischer for re-election to new six-year terms.

Robert Higgs reports George “Bill” Keaton feels frustration that he couldn’t do more as United Airlines Flight 93 vanished from his radar screen near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
9/11 and air travel: Remember when you’d get off a plane and your family and friends would be waiting for you at the gate, excited for your return? If you’re under the age of 30, you probably don’t. Susan Glaser reports on how the 9/11 terrorist attacks changed air travel forever.
National security: Sept. 11, 2001, spawned a massive national security overhaul. Sabrina Eaton reports that two decades later, precautions that range from digital surveillance to airline passenger pat-downs have prevented a large-scale terrorism recurrence. But they have raised big-brotherism concerns.
Stock buybacks: U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown is using his perch as chair of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs to attack a Wall Street practice that he contends prioritizes profits at the expense of people - the use of corporate cash to repurchase stocks instead of making investments, creating new jobs or raising wages. Sabrina Eaton reports that on Friday, Brown introduced a bill that would impose a 2 percent excise tax on the value of any securities corporations repurchase.
Aircraft emissions: Cleveland’s NASA Glenn Research Center will play a role in a new federal drive to cut aviation emissions by 20% by 2030 through the use of sustainable fuels and to replace all fuel currently used in the nation’s jets with sustainable alternatives by 2050. Sabrina Eaton reports the Biden Administration announced Thursday that the Departments of Energy, Transportation, Agriculture, Defense, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the General Services Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency will collaborate to produce billions of gallons of sustainable fuel that will enable the targeted drop in aircraft emissions.
Irishtown Bend: A long-running effort to stabilize the brush-covered Irishtown Bend hillside above the Flats and to top it with a new riverfront park took a big leap forward Friday with a vote by Northeast Ohio’s leading planning agency to devote $12.8 million in federal money to the $45 million project. Steven Litt reports the board of the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, NOACA, which oversees federal and state transportation spending in Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Geauga, and Medina counties, voted unanimously to award the money to the Irishtown Bend project.
Sherwin-Williams: The new Sherwin-Williams headquarters proposed for downtown Cleveland is part of a new generation of bland and impersonal glassy offices and apartments rising across the city, and indeed around the world, writes architecture critic Steven Litt. The new tower will thicken the skyline and make Cleveland look more vibrant and consequential but the design will likely earn a middle position on the skyline in terms of its capacity to stoke affection and civic pride.
COVID cases spike: Ohio had 9,019 new coronavirus cases and 134 deaths on Friday, highs the state has not experienced for months, reports Laura Hancock. The last time Ohio exceeded 9,000 new cases in a single day was Jan. 8, when vaccines hadn’t been in the state for even a month. On that day, there were 9,535 cases.
