I was talking to my friend, Bug, recently about riding motorcycles. Bug has been riding for years, so I asked him what advice he has for a new rider.
 
“More than anything, relax,” he said, extending his arms to emphasize his point. It’s easy to get in your head when you’re new to riding, he explained. “Don’t overthink it. Be patient and ride your own ride.”
 
I thought of Bug’s advice as I read today’s top stories about in-person and flexible work models. Many employers and employees are locked in a tug-of-war over the issue and each side makes reasonable arguments for their case.

This is a complicated problem, I know. We need time to work it all out. We need to experiment and reflect on what works, what doesn’t and what we can do differently. 
 
We need to be patient, Bug would say. We need to avoid hair-trigger judgments on models and practices because they don’t work right away or even within a few months. We need to give models a fair shot, be honest with our observations and make adjustments as we move along.
