The Elder Justice Act of 2010 requires that any financial exploitation (including theft), abuse, or neglect of elders be reported immediately to law enforcement. Facilities should have a theft and loss program in place to safeguard residents’ property which should include strict policies and procedures that not only explain the Elder Justice Act, but also outline the process for investigating and reporting allegations. Each facility's process differs, as the details can change based on available resources, prevalence of theft, and resident population. The Theft Prevention Guide for Senior Living includes a sample theft policy & procedure to guide facilities in the development or revision of their own policies regarding theft: Click here to view the sample theft policy & procedure For a complete, detailed guide to preventing and combating theft in your facility, The Theft Prevention Guide for Senior Living is full of tips and actionable advice about theft prevention in senior living facilities including how to prevent resident identity theft, protect residents’ personal health information, and screen employees to weed out potential criminals. |
