Woodward as our managing editor. This week, we learned that he passed away at age 86. I never got the pleasure to have met him, but his amazing reputation has carried on. In the tribute we published yesterday, it said: “It was under the careful and caring eye of that man, Don C. Woodward, that more than a generation of Utah journalists have honed their craft. He was the man that reporters, editors and photographers turned to for advice that was sometimes sage, sometimes fatherly and always focused closely on being ethical and doing what’s right.” Also on our minds: Arrests at the border are resulting in a political showdown, is the media failing people of faith and is Disney too expensive? |
| Study: Latter-day Saint missions change political views on immigration |
|
| | Utah is a red state, and conventional wisdom would lead you to believe that means its citizens have relatively conservative views on immigration. But according to a study of 1,804 returned Latter-day Saint missionaries in The Journal of Politics from the University of Chicago, many of the participants who served missions around migrants or large Latin American populations viewed pro-immigration policies more favorably. |
What else did the study say and what does it mean for Utah’s political landscape? Read more here. |
| Former Vice President Mike Pence spoke this week at Utah Valley University in Orem on several key issues in American politics including civility, abortion, the economy, Jan. 6 and freedom of religion. Although he expressed his agreement and appreciation for some of former President Donald Trump’s policies, he distanced himself from his rhetoric and divisive style. But what about running for president? You’ll have to read what he said here.
