“I would say nothing of what I’d seen to anyone. I would instead try to write it down.”
In an essay for Commonweal, author Kathleen Hill revisits the fickle space of memory as she wrote about her time in Zinder for her first book, Still Waters in Niger. At the time, she felt anguished by the attempt to tell the story, and so she arrived at an artists’ colony in Saratoga Springs to find a voice for her writing. It was there that she happened to meet David Foster Wallace.
Moving between her memories of Africa and her acquaintance with Wallace, Hill sensitively explores the limits of what we can know of a place or person in a short amount of time and the gift of memory to bring back almost-forgotten details. This essay, “Elegy,” can be found online and in print in the September 2024 issue of Commonweal.
