Dear John
As a little boy, Dad and I would often split things at meals.
Anything from a dessert to a small loaf of bread...it was an opportunity for my dad to teach me fairness.
One of us would cut the food in two pieces and the other would get to pick which piece they wanted.
As I grew older I began to fully realize and admire how selfless Dad always was when choosing his half.
And it didn’t stop there...Dad was always thinking of others before himself, in instances both large and small.
He always wanted the best for my mom, my sisters, and me, and he sacrificed for us all the time.
So one day, after enjoying a delicious steak dinner with Dad, we found ourselves with one piece leftover.
And, just like old times, Dad asked me if I wanted to split it.
Naturally, I said yes...and he then asked me to cut it in two.
For whatever reason, I understood Dad’s selflessness and decided to put him to the test (because I knew how much he loved steak!)
I proceeded to intentionally cut the steak in two pieces but instead of 50/50, I did 65/35.
The look on Dad’s face was priceless!
He had to pick between what he really wanted (the big piece) and what he was committed to...setting an example of selflessness for me.
No surprise - he took the small piece…
And as he began to move it to his plate, I stopped him and said,
“No Dad. I want you to have the big piece.”
I believe that was the best tasting piece of steak either of us ever had.
And it was yet another example of just how committed Dad was to leading his family by example and instilling sound values in us.
When my team and I put together our Ziglar Father’s Day Gift Set, we hoped to give any dad who receives it the tools to pass on those same values - service and self-sacrifice - and the resources to remain steadfast in their leadership of their family.
