Ross Innovation in Esports, A Customer Study
Ross Live | 2020 Esports Week featured a live case study presentation featuring James Dean, Founder and CEO at ESL UK and Andrew Wagnitz, Director Broadcast technology at Next Generation Esports (NGE). Cameron Reed, Esports Business Development Manager with Ross Video sat down with both James and Andrew to discuss how the industry has coped during the Covid-19 pandemic and the group also spoke about how esports productions have achieved ‘more with less’.
Typically, esports production budgets have been limited compared to traditional broadcasts. Despite this, as the industry has evolved there is now an expectation to deliver a world-class show on par with traditional broadcast. Subsequently, esports productions teams have had to find new and innovative ways to deliver quality productions, now more than ever.
As part of the in-depth conversation with two industry leaders about all things esports, Andrew Wagnitz begins by explaining how his team has adjusted during this time.
“When we were forced to shut down our studio, we had about twelve hours to come-up with an alternative production solution for a scheduled show the next day. We quickly went to the drawing board and decided to pick-up our Ross mobile flight kit and brought it to someone’s residence to deliver the show” he says adding that “we were able to setup our Carbonite, our Mira, our XPression, and observer stations at home. To our surprise we didn’t miss a beat.”
Speaking more broadly about how Ross solutions have elevated esports productions, Wagnitz addresses how the combination of DashBoard and XPression has allowed them to do more with less. “We don’t always have the size of crews as your traditional broadcast production so the DashBoard and XPression solution has been a big advantage for us” he says.
Another way that esports productions have elevated the production quality of events is via implementation of Augmented Reality (AR) graphics. James Dean addresses how AR has really helped esports producers to effectively tell their stories and showcase corporate sponsors. Ultimately, Dean and credits Ross for working with ESL “from the ground-up to make this feature more accessible” for the esports industry.
