A new secret weapon in the war on feral hogs

TO DIE FOR: It’s rubbery, tastes like fish oil and looks like earwax, but wild pigs are literally dying to eat it, Tristan Baurick reports. It’s a lethal new bait patented by Louisiana scientists, and they hope it’s a game-changer in their fight to control destructive populations of feral hogs. It’s a fight they are currently losing.

A PROBLEMATIC SHOOTING: Kia Simmons, a security guard posted to the main branch of the New Orleans Public Library, shot an unruly patron seven times late Saturday after they quarrelled and the man hurled a brick at her. The man is in critical condition, while Simmons faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

A TRAGIC ACCIDENT: A 3-year-old boy was also in critical condition Sunday after his neighbor fired a gun in his New Orleans East apartment that traveled through the wall and struck the boy in the head as he slept. Authorities described it as a tragic accident. The man, 22-year-old Javonte Shelton, had thought the weapon was unloaded. He was booked on a charge of second-degree battery.
