Positive drug tests among workers hit the highest level since 2001 last year, with marijuana, cocaine and amphetamine use soaring, according to the Quest Diagnostics Drug Testing Index. Still, with labor market conditions challenging recruitment and retention, companies are left to weigh how concerned they are about what workers do on their own time.

The HR Leader
"Clean power" is the practice of power and influence without "abuse, office politics, backstabbing and manipulation" -- requiring leaders to regularly revisit their networks, create reciprocity with key stakeholders and organize a coalition for big issues, writes Art Petty. "Couple this effort with a genuine effort to generate visibility for individuals helping you make it happen, and you reinforce the reciprocity effect in a virtuous manner," Petty writes.

Sleep experts debate whether time change is healthy
(Pixabay)
In the wake of the US Senate's approval of a bill to make daylight saving time permanent, sleep scientists are talking about whether that or year-round standard time is the healthier option. Aloha dear readers!

I bring you greetings from our 50th state. As you read this, I am in shorts and slippers (you’ll never hear me call them flip flops -- that’s something fish do) with my hair up in a messy bun. I’m slow sipping a marvelous cup of Kona coffee that my grandson and I fetched this morning at the coffee shop just down the street from our beachfront condo. The morning air is perfumed with gardenia and ginger and the view from our lanai is spectacular.

I’m on vacation folks. This column will be on hiatus for the next week as I spend some down time with my ohana. I’ll be hiking Halema’uma’u with my niece and granddaughter; introducing my grandson to guava malasadas and hot cocoa; beating my son and daughter at bowling; shopping with my brother and sisters-in-law; watching the Final Four with my son- and daughter-in-law; defending my title in a Scrabble marathon with my mom and sister; and listening to my dad preach at church on Sunday.

And then I’ll be back on Monday, April 11, rested and refreshed -- and armed with a whole new bag of stories to tell.

Until then, have a wonderful weekend and a productive week.

Aloha!
