Some express regret about missing out on low mortgage rates

The low mortgage rates of the pandemic and rapid increases in recent months have prompted many homeowners to compare terms of their loans, according to real estate journalist Ronda Kaysen. "When I contacted people, they were usually on one of two sides: those who bragged about how great their rate was or those who were angry they didn't buy a home," she said.

US banks and credit unions' outstanding loans from the Federal Home Loan Banks totaled $880 billion at the end of June. That represents a decline compared with the $1 trillion recorded at the end of the first quarter but a 150% increase compared with the end of last year, FHLB data shows.
