Vancouver, Canada is officially out of the running to host the 2030 Winter Games after the country's officials withdrew their bid citing concerns of cost to taxpayers.
As of now, Canada's withdrawal leaves Salt Lake City and Sapporo, Japan, still in the running to be the venue for the 2030 Winter Olympics.
Although the cost to taxpayers is what ultimately motivated Canada's decision, supporters of Utah's Olympic bid have said that this will not be a concern for the Beehive State.
“With our bid, there is no requirement for state or local taxpayer funding,” said Fraser Bullock, president and CEO of the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games. The proposed budget is $2.2 billion, and Bullock says all of the funds needed to cover the hefty total would come from private sources.
The chances that Utah taxpayers will have to cough up some cash for another Winter Games is “extremely low. I would never say zero, because nothing’s zero,” Utah Senate President Stuart Adams said.
