EVENT INDUSTRY BUZZ

1. DEMOCRATS CONCERNED WITH TRUMP’S FOURTH OF JULY PLANS: Earlier this year, President Trump tweeted his plans for a “Salute to America,” an event coinciding with Washington’s Fourth of July celebrations that would include a presidential address, fireworks, and a parade. But less than a month away from the event, the D.C. mayor’s office said it doesn’t have event details beyond what Trump tweeted and the White House has released minimal information, leading to concerns from Democrats about event logistics and the celebration turning political. ABC News: “In addition to security, funding and logistical concerns, some have also accused the president of wanting to turn the annual non-partisan celebration into a political event. ‘President Trump's efforts to insert politics into a celebration of our nation's history is extremely alarming,’ said House Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said in a statement. ‘Forcing taxpayers to foot the bill for what amounts to a political rally is irresponsible and a misuse of funds. I strongly urge the President to reconsider his proposed event,’ he added. Hoyer, along with Democratic Congressional members Raúl Grijalva and Betty McCollum, sent a letter to Trump in response to the proposed event.”

2. GRETCHEN CARSON RESIGNS AS MISS AMERICA CHAIRWOMAN: Gretchen Carlson, a TV journalist and former Miss America, has stepped down as the Miss American Organization chairwoman. Carlson was part of an all-women leadership team that took over the pageant following an email scandal in which male leaders disparaged former winners on their appearance, intelligence, and sex lives. Associated Press: “Carlson pushed for the elimination of the swimsuit competition from the pageant, which originated in Atlantic City nearly 100 years ago. In its place last year, contestants spoke about themselves, their goals, and how they planned to serve the community. … She will be replaced by Shantel Krebs, the former South Dakota secretary of state. Attorney Brenda Keith will be vice-chair. The location of this year’s pageant still has not been determined."

3. BUMBLE TO OPEN A WINE BAR: Dating app Bumble has been hosting live events for years, but its latest venture will be a café and wine bar in New York. Serving as a venue for people to meet up, the Bumble Brew will open in New York’s Soho neighborhood this fall. Advertising Age: “The space will operate through the day, first as a coffee shop, before transitioning into a wine bar with small plates. The company sees this as a way to engage its expanding audience, from the signature dating app to its networking platform Bumble Bizz. … Bumble Brew is partnering with Delicious Hospitality (Charlie Bird, Pasquale Jones) to create the food and beverages. During the day, there’ll be a selection of croissants and other pastries, as well as the same coffee program employed at Legacy Records near Hudson Yards.”

4. QUEEN ELIZABETH IS HIRING A SECRET EVENT PLANNER: Queen Elizabeth is hiring an event planner—but the catch is the employee won’t be able to tell anyone where they work. The royal household recently posted a listing on its website for the role of events coordinator. The person chosen would work with the Lord Chamberlain’s Office to manage a variety of official, ceremonial events throughout the year, including investitures, garden parties, and state occasions. Business Insider: “The job, which pays £27,000 ($34,129) per year, could also provide the opportunity to rub shoulders with the Queen's party guests. Not only will the planner be working behind the scenes to make sure the event runs smoothly, but he or she will also be ‘at the heart of our activities, working alongside our operational teams on the day to ensure every event is delivered to the highest standard,’ according to the vacancy on the royal household website.”

5. NASHVILLE’S MUSIC ROW NAMED TO LIST OF MOST ENDANGERED HISTORIC PLACES: The National Trust for Historic Preservation has added Nashville’s Music Row to its list of Most Endangered Historic Places. One of 11 places on the list, Music Row has had 50 demolitions since 2013. Billboard: “While many people throughout Nashville have been fighting for the saving of Music Row, metro council member Jeff Syracuse, who works in the area as associate director licensing customer relations at B.M.I., says more needs to be done at both the local and state level. And, with the area now being named an endangered place it will call attention to the public and create more awareness of Music Row's potential demise. … Syracuse has been part of ongoing conversations to create a nonprofit to help facilitate the preservation of Music Row, specifically in saving its buildings and making them affordable for new residents and businesses.”
