GOVERNORS BALL MUSIC FESTIVAL EVACUATED DUE TO SEVERE WEATHER: The final day of Governors Ball music festival in New York was evacuated due to severe weather on Sunday night, with headliners the Strokes and SZA among the cancelled acts. The event on Randall’s Island already was delayed seven hours because of impending storms. Eleven artists performed after the gates opened at 6:30 p.m., but the festival evacuated attendees around 9:30 p.m. New York Daily News: “The evacuation order capped a frustrating day for concertgoers, who paid hundreds of dollars for tickets. ‘To pay $200 for three hours is unacceptable. There is a safety issue, but refunds should be made,’ said Mark Finnerty, 38, from Kildare, Ireland. Some concertgoers destroyed an art installation late Sunday as the crowd left the island amid pouring and thundering rain. … Attendees chanted ‘Refund!’ ‘F--- you!’ and ‘We want The Strokes!’ as they waited in the downpour for ferries to take them off the Island. Organizers posted on Twitter that they would soon provide information about refunds to Sunday’s events.” 2. NASHVILLE’S MUSIC ROW NAMED TO LIST OF MOST ENDANGERED HISTORIC PLACES: The National Trust for Historic Preservation has added Nashville’s Music Row to its list of Most Endangered Historic Places. One of 11 places on the list, Music Row has had 50 demolitions since 2013. Billboard: “While many people throughout Nashville have been fighting for the saving of Music Row, metro council member Jeff Syracuse, who works in the area as associate director licensing customer relations at B.M.I., says more needs to be done at both the local and state level. And, with the area now being named an endangered place it will call attention to the public and create more awareness of Music Row's potential demise. … Syracuse has been part of ongoing conversations to create a nonprofit to help facilitate the preservation of Music Row, specifically in saving its buildings and making them affordable for new residents and businesses.” 3. APPLE TO END ITUNES AND INTRODUCE NEW APP APPROACH AT DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE: Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off today in San Jose, and the company is expected to announce the end of iTunes, a new approach to apps, and updates to operating systems. Chief executive officer Tim Cook and other tech leaders will make a keynote presentation at the event, which runs through June 7 at San Jose McEnery Convention Center. Bloomberg: “The changes will showcase Apple’s new generation of devices and software: Apple Watches that are more independent from iPhones, iPads with software that reduces the need for a laptop, apps that run on any Apple device, and growth areas such as augmented reality and personal health-care management, according to people familiar with the plans. While the developer conference is software-focused, the company often sprinkles new hardware announcements in at the event. This year, Apple won't show off a new Apple Watch or iPhone hardware until the fall, but has considered previewing the new Mac Pro at the conference.” |
