March 15, 2023Good morning. ⛅ Despite criticism on this website and elsewhere, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh went ahead and opened a government-sponsored show in Saudi Arabia. What's more, the Warhol director Patrick Moore published an unconvincing defense of the show in a market publication, using the old "cultural dialogue" argument. Today, Sarah Leah Whitson, executive director of Democracy for the Arab World Now (a nonprofit founded by the late Jamal Khashoggi), explains what the Warhol Museum could have done to truly promote dialogue about Saudi Arabia's human rights abuses. In other stories, the Portland Art Museum apologized for asking a Native American woman to remove her traditional baby carrier while she was visiting a show of Native art. Also, a "Museum of Democracy" is set to open in Brazil, a print sale to raise funds for earthquake relief in Turkey and Syria, and much more. Finally, please join us today for an online conversation about art, whiteness, and empire with Hyperallergic fellow, curator and scholar Dr. Kelli Morgan. The event will begin at 6pm Eastern Time. In the meantime, you can read Morgan's work here. — Hakim Bishara, Senior Editor How Not to Artwash Saudi Arabia's Gruesome Human Rights RecordUnder which conditions should an art museum ethically and responsibly do business with a repressive authoritarian government? | Sarah Leah Whitson IN THE NEWS Harrison Marshall posed with tiny Skip House (photo by Katie Edwards/ courtesy Caukin Studios)
