How Pros Trade Opening Gaps and Avoid the Traps

Here’s a pro tip for everyone holding options overnight when the market gaps up at the open…

First, don’t fall for the ol’ banana in the tailpipe!

Markets that gap up at the open are often bull traps — especially when there aren’t any catalysts coming to push things higher.

What’s a bull trap? It’s a false signal that can and will reverse course, usually right after over-eager bulls go long.

Here’s a recent example of this in the S&P 500. Note the BIG red candle coming right after the opening pop…

Smart traders give the market time to show its hand during the first 30 minutes or so after the open.

That first 30 minutes is also a great time to unload your longs on the morning pop — but again, it’s not a good time to buy anything in the event the gap up is just a bull trap.

We need a strong directional bias in order to put on high-probability trades, so keep that in mind next time you’re feeling the FOMO after a monster gap up or down on the open!
