There’s been a fierce debate over masculinity lately. The combatants seem to fall into two camps. One opts for a sort of machismo vision. In this view, real men hunt, grunt, and throw axes. “That’s not masculinity,” the other side cries. “Real men are sensitive, sweet.”
Honestly, both sides leave me cold. One reduces masculinity to a silly caricature; the other hails many essential virtues—but ones shared by both sexes. That’s why I found Mike Cosper’s recent essay on the topic refreshing.
