How Should Men Live?

There’s been a fierce debate over masculinity lately. The combatants seem to fall into two camps. One opts for a sort of machismo vision. In this view, real men hunt, grunt, and throw axes. “That’s not masculinity,” the other side cries. “Real men are sensitive, sweet.”

Honestly, both sides leave me cold. One reduces masculinity to a silly caricature; the other hails many essential virtues—but ones shared by both sexes. That’s why I found Mike Cosper’s recent essay on the topic refreshing. He cuts through the cultural stereotypes and progressive visions of masculinity to highlight what the church can say about being a real man. Read: How Then Should Men Live?

Speaking of masculinity, check out our resource on Ministry to Men. This newly updated 14-page resource will equip leaders to be effective at galvanizing men into becoming better fathers, husbands, sons, and followers of Jesus.

Ministry to Men
The statistics are sobering: over the years, male attendance in church has steadily dropped to its current rate of less than 40 percent. How can your church energize the men in your congregation, and draw more men into the life of your church? Men's ministries can successfully serve as an entry point into your church or be an effective discipleship element for those already part of your church. But building and growing a men's ministry takes time, effort, and wisdom.
