How some Baton Rouge hotels become crime hotspots

As our crime reporters covered Baton Rouge's soaring homicide rate, they noticed the crime scene tape kept going up at a handful of local hotels. So they started investigating.

They found some hotels have a staggering number of calls to police — one has had more than one per day. And they found some possible explanations for what's behind it all, including issues with the hotels' business model and a lack of enforcement of local laws.

When is an insurance company acting in bad faith? It's a million-dollar question in Louisiana — particularly after major hurricanes, when many homeowners feel their insurers aren't paying them enough or aren't paying quickly enough. 

Some lawmakers want to toughen up the penalties on insurers. But some worry those bills would cause companies to flee the market, raising prices for policyholders.
