❌ The U.S. May Soon Outlaw Hidden Junk Fees |
Tired of comparison shopping and landing on a price, only to get slapped over the head with junk fees at checkout? |
Those days may soon come to an end. |
California recently signed into law (starting July 1, 2024) a bill that bans “offering a price for a good or service that does not include all mandatory fees or charges other than taxes.” |
That follows Airbnb’s announcement in November 2022 that it would allow customers to see the total pre-tax cost of a booking in their search results. Customers were upset about junk fees such as cleaning fees getting added to the cost when they went to complete the booking process. |
Now, the Federal Trade Commission has proposed a rule to ban “hidden and bogus fees that can cost consumers an extra $80 billion every year,” NBC News reported. |
The FTC claims enforcing such a rule on the ticketing (concerts, sporting events) and short-term lodging (hotel) industries could save Americans 50 million hours a year. |
