Iran called for FIFA to kick the U.S. out of the World Cup on Sunday after the team's official social media account posted a graphic featuring an altered version of the Iranian flag.
Coach Gregg Berhalter said the team was not aware of what was posted on the account but apologized on behalf of the team and staff. The U.S. Soccer Federation said the decision to remove the Islamic Republic emblem from the flag was meant to show “support for the women in Iran fighting for basic human rights,” according to Sports Illustrated.
Iranian journalists peppered Berhalter and team captain Tyler Adams with political questions during their joint press conference on Monday, including if Adams is OK representing a country that discriminates against black people.
The U.S. plays Iran on Tuesday at noon MST and must win if they want to advance in the tournament.
