It has been more than a month since President Trump agreed to set aside $300 million in COVID-19 bailout money to help the struggling U.S. fishing industry, but regulators have yet to say who is eligible for financial rescue, much less distribute money. A group representing restaurant owners and workers across Maine has asked Gov. Janet Mills to reconsider restrictions on when restaurants can reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic. By 4 p.m., the crowd of diners lined up around the building on Route 2 had grown to roughly 100. Zucco’s Dog House in Hampden and Shear Attraction Salon in Bangor reopened for business Friday as part of the first phase of Gov. Janet Mills’ four-stage restart of the state’s economy after weeks of a broad shutdown. Acknowledging that some people are frustrated and angry, she said she is proceeding in consultation with people and businesses, with public health as the first priority. The eight cases of COVID-19 reported earlier this week made the Portland plant the site of the first outbreak in Maine outside of a health care setting. The usual top-sellers in Maine — Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Fireball Whisky and Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy — are among the brands that have sold the most over the past couple of months. The Maine Department of Labor advised that applicants could file claims anytime before the end of the day Saturday and still receive benefits on time. An Oxford County restaurant owner who read Gov. Janet Mills' cellphone number during a Fox News appearance and once hired the governor as a defense attorney plans to open to dine-in customers on Friday in defiance of a state order aimed at slowing the coronavirus. Attendance at the shipyard has fallen since BIW offered workers leave options while it remained open during the coronavirus outbreak.
