Female employees are less likely than their male counterparts to speak up and contribute when they're working in an uncivil workplace because they fear backlash, according to research published in the Journal of Business Ethics. "Left unaddressed, not only can incivility cause the organization to miss out on many valuable ideas, but they will disproportionately lose ideas from women," write the researchers, who recommend employers set expectations for respect, ensure leaders model respectful behavior and follow up on complaints involving incivility.

This week’s Friday Fave comes from Education Week and talks about a sobering topic: alcohol abuse among educators. Kentucky Teacher of the Year Jessica Dueñas bravely shares her 13-year struggle with alcohol and how it eventually led her to leave the profession. She went on to launch an organization, Bottomless to Sober, aimed at helping people who are in recovery from alcohol abuse. 
 
Why did I pick this for my Friday Fave? 
 
Because Dueñas’ story reminded me that Life is messy -- for everybody. Divorce. Domestic abuse. Addiction. Legal problems. Financial challenges. Illness. Death. These are the realities of life.

So my question to you now is: How do we support folks as they walk through it? How do we help them not get swallowed by the challenge? Let me know your thoughts.
