How can the everyday nonprofit bring America together? We have discovered more than a few answers in our reporting for The Commons, and I want to share a few here to illustrate how organizations can make a difference — and grow stronger as a result.

The Commons is the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s new project to explore how to close the country’s divides and strengthen communities. We’re reporting on major funding efforts and the bold ideas driving what many see as a new movement.

But again and again, my conversations turn to the big payoff of small changes — particularly when it comes to nonprofits, whose work reaches deep into communities nationwide. The three stories below give you a sense of the possibilities and show how work to close divides can bolster fundraising and advance your mission.
